Blowing heads like scanners

So EMan calls me today to tell me that he can't wait for tomorrow (that would be Tuesday, the day of Deep See). It's been like that for a while now. Every Monday, I can pretty much expect I'm going to get a phone call from EMan telling me how psyched he is to play tomorrow night. He calls it "fun day."

There is no better feeling than knowing the thing you put hard work and effort into is making people so happy, including the people that "work there."

Some people say "I want to do what I love for a living." Some people just dream about it. While we couldn't possibly earn a living off of Deep See (try cab fare home, some groceries, and a blunt), the fact that we can simply DO IT is what matters. When you have a crowd as great as ours (shout out time: Byron, Shannon, Micky & Carlos, Keith, Hideki, Tone, Hammer, Rich Robles, Ron Paizley, PeeWee, Doug, Jovonn, Marc, Manny, Lono, Evelyn, Iris, Jorge, Will, Kai, Al Boogie, Malcolm, and all our ultra-cute dancers and everyone else that hangs with us) that loves the music as much as they do and SHOWS you, as a DJ, you get a feeling like anything is possible. And with the crew at Deep See, sometimes I actually feel like it is *cue violin music*.

But in all seriousness, EMan's phone call today just made me think how fortunate we are, and how we've hung in there when people tried to doubt us or pretend we didn't exist (hey, it still happens so I guess not much has changed!). We have had some lean nights at Deep See where the attendance was so pitiful, I couldn't wait to go home. We survived long enough at each venue we went to to pick up some new faces along the way, and keep playing. We somehow bounced back after 9/11. Adam Scott (a New York-based DJ who was the resident at John Davis' "Legends" party in the downstairs room at the now-defunct club Life on Bleecker St. The party was dope...) was supposed to play with us that night. You can take a look at the flyer to see that date, printed in "pre-9/11" time, and oh how our world has changed. We moved to Sapphire, our fifth-ever space in the nearly five-year history of Deep See, and it's almost hard to believe that only now is the party beginning to find its feet.

I mean, if you ask me, I always thought Deep See was the ish, but then again, sometimes I think or say things and other people think I'm nuts, so it just took a while to prove me right this time around :)

Anyway, so E's on the phone, yapping about how excited he is to play tomorrow night, when we start busting out sayings: "blowing heads like scanners!" "hitting the target like a heat seeker," basically rah-rahing our own party, which we love so much. And we love it so much that other people love it so much. It's a beautiful thing.
