post-Cielo update
It's been over one week since we did Cielo for Beyond004. I promised an update and here it is:
The music was, as they used to say in the '80s, "to die for," but we could've had a better turnout. EMan and I graded the night a "B": not a strong B, but not a weak one either, just straight down the middle, B. We reached the peak at probably about 1:30 or 2am. The few people who were left at 4 where hooting and hollering like true last-on-the-dancefloor closers, and for that, I love them. But around 4am, Willie came over to the booth, started gradually brinding the lights up, and then we were done. The last song was Josh Wink's "How's Your Evening So Far?" Kind of a monster to end the night on, I could've picked something more cool-down-ish, but the crowd seemed to dig it.
I opened and played til about 1am or so, then EMan played til about 2:30, I got back on and played til just about the end. I felt totally comfortable in Cielo's booth this time around. The first Beyond we did at Cielo (Beyond003 with jojoflores in July) I had a bit of a rough time getting aclimated in the booth. This time I got in there and was comfortable after my first mix.
The usual suspects, our wild and wooly bunch of regulars were in the house, as well as some newbies and sometimes-bies. If you're reading this, thank you: Byron, Shannon, Sha, Carlos, Micky, Kieth, Tomoko, Loose Louis, Siu, Marc and friends, Juliette, Lil Dee, and anyone else I was too entranced to notice that night. I don't know if it was because I was on pre-surgury lock down and not moving around that much and kind of in pain, or because I was so into the music that night, or a combination of factors, but I barely remember any details about this night. It all seems like a big beautiful blur. Nothing in particular stands out. My sharpest memory is also the most fluid: it's a shifting memory of being in the booth, cueing the records, tweaking the crossover, having an amazing time just sucked into Cielo's lovely system. So if anyone spoke to me that night and I seemed on another planet, I really was. But I'm not upset that I don't remember details, because I remember the feeling, and it was great.
The week after, at Deep See, it was just me and EMan and we were still on a high from Cielo. Our crowd is so wonderful, totally supportive, full of energy, and loves us the most the more left we go (so long as it's funky and has got a groove).
To all you sparkling wonderchildren of our nightlife, thanks for being there, because for real, without you, there would be no us.

Lola, you played exquisitley (sp?) at Cielo! The mixes, the beats, the depth - all wonderful.
I haven't had the chance to hear you and EMan at DeepSee yet, but I am looking forward to you next weekend party, whereever that may be.
God bless.
